Application Process
Apply using the University of Utah Graduate Admissions Application. Follow the instructions on the application site to submit the following required

When evaluating applications, our admission committee does not only consider traditional academic achievements (including grades, research experience, publications, etc.). Rather, we view these achievements in the context of the applicant’s personal and academic environment, and the degree to which these factors have provided opportunities for achievement and success. To give the committee the best perspective on your application, PLEASE ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING IN YOUR STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
- What is your motivation to pursue a PhD in Chemistry? Do you have plans for your career path after degree completion?
- What areas of research and which specific research groups at the University of Utah are you most interested in?
- Please describe aspects of your experiences and background (academic, professional, and personal) that have prepared you to pursue a PhD. Examples of relevant experiences include not only research, but also other experiences that demonstrate your intellectual curiosity, perseverance, ability to succeed in challenging new environments, community engagement, etc.

- International application fee waiver is NOT available for Fall 2024 class prior to applying
- We require you to cover the application when applying. Upon your admittance into our program we will reimburse this cost.
- International students must pay the application fee in order to consider your application complete. Applications will not be reviewed until all required documentation and materials are received.
- Faculty and departments are not able to provide or sponsor application fee waivers for international students.

The Department participates in the fellowship program “Enhancing Diversity and Graduate Student Success” (EDGES) of the College of Science. More information about the EDGES fellowship and how to apply can be found here.

Acceptance Dates
- For priority consideration, completed applications should be received by December 1. Applications received after that date and until February 1 will be reviewed in an ongoing basis.
- By agreement with other U.S. universities, we ask that you make your decision to ACCEPT
our chemistry graduate offer by April 15.
- To ACCEPT our offer, simply send an email to that effect over to Jo Vallejo (jvallejo@chem.utah.edu)
- All PhD students in good academic standing are guaranteed five years of financial
support, either as a Teaching Assistant or as a Research Assistant.
- Most first year graduate students are granted teaching fellowships that provide an
annual stipend and a tuition waiver.
- In addition, the Chemistry Department will provide a basic health insurance plan to students who are not otherwise covered by a policy.
